Barrie-Muskoka Nearby: Bracebridge
Bracebridge was a major town on the important colonization road built through the District Municipality of Muskoka, starting at Washago in 1858 and reaching Bracebridge by 1861. The town is named by an 1864 postal officiael after Washinton Irving's 1822 novel "Bracebridge Hal or the Humourists"
Bracebridge Bay Park, at the base of the falls captures the imagination of the visitor. Location of a trestle train bridge to the mill. Today, you can view the basin and the falls from along the historic walk, past all the vantage points and the interpretive signs.
Bracebridge is easy to explore on foot. The main street rises in tiers of shops, services and restaurants, many with vintage architectural facades. At night the Town's clock, bell tower, courthouse and "silver bridge" are outlined in unique, colourful lighting. The town has many turn -of-the-century old homes and churches just off of Manitoba Street. You can also follow the Historic Heritage Walk.
Anchoring the downtown core, at the top of the falls is the renovated Bird Mill, once entrepreneur Henry Bird's woolen mill, and now the Town's Visitor Information Centre, as well as Riverwalk, a fine dining restaurant & Jazz Club, and the Bracebridge Chamber of Commerce. Bird's impressive restored octagonal home, Woodchester Villa, is perched on a hill opposite the falls.
The town also has a sign that points out that it lies on the 45th Parallel, halfway from the equator to the North Pole, from which Santa's Village takes its cue.
Muskoka has been the traditional "getaway" destination for cottagers and vacationers for over a hundred years. During the summer, Muskoka's population swells from just over 50,000 to nearly 150,000.

15 King Street in Bracebridge
This octagonal house was built in 1882 by logging pioneer Henry J. Bird stands on a sloping lot, with the west or main entrance close to the grade at the front , and the lower basement kitchen entrance level with the grade at the rear, lower down the slope. Four of its sides are 16 feet wide and the other intermediate four walls being 14 feet wide, probably to cut down the size of the inevitable triangular rooms. The basement walls are of squared random-width fieldstone, as were the original walls above, though ground settling necessitated subsequently repairs and stucco. The walls are 16 inches thick on average. Today, as a house museum, Woodchester Villa is furnished in the style of the year 1914. open to the public from Canada Day (July 1) until Labour Day (first weekend in September). Hours are Tuesday to Saturday, from 9am to 5pm. Admission is $2 per adult, $1 for children and $5 for families.
